The annual presentation of the Spirit of Liberty Award and the Defender of Democracry Award are given by People For the American Way and the People For the American Way Foundation, to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to advancing the values and principles at the core of the American Way: freedom of religion, tolerance, civic responsibility and equal opportunity.
Norman Lear, producer, director, screenwriter, philanthropist, and political and social activitist, Barbara Jordan and a group of distinguished business, religious, political and entertainment leaders, founded the organization in 1981 as a direct response to the Religious Right's radical and extremist agenda. He created an organization to energize Americans' respect for individual liberty, celebration of diversity, love of country and of the democratic institutions at its core.
